A. Focus Point

Updated: Apr 27, 2021

This Final Product is an expression from a previous assignment, Comprehensive Assignment for my Mindfulness in Education Course. The document may be found below.

I chose to focus on Native American cultural education, technology education, and mindfulness. To begin, I decided to research Native American cultural education and technology education with the focus on mindfulness. Since there are so many themes that can come about each subtopic, I chose perspective, my perspective. The foundation of a Personal Perspective of mindfulness begins with The Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) in Berkeley and Peter Senge's Presentation on System Thinking.

GGSC defines mindfulness as, "...maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens."

Peter Senge, discusses the Santiago Theory of Cognition. Here it is believed that people do not perceive their reality, "We perceive the world we know how to perceive, we do not perceive the world we see." and "Perception is a reflection of our history." (Bailey, 2016). Using these two concepts, I then began my search to seek how Native Americans are using their mindfulness online.

I am an Alaskan Native, Yupik and Inupiaq Eskimo. I did not grow up traditionally; however, I have self-taught my cultural and spiritual beliefs, was taught by my family how to respect and preserve food from the land, and the significance of our language and traditions. Being of Eskimo descendent, I am holistically connected to Mother Earth with learning ways to conceptualize the modern world. As you may know, our history has much conflict, which brings chaos. It is in my blood to naturally feel the connection with nature; land, air and sea living and nonliving things. As an Educator, I have not had the time to really sit down to put all my collective thoughts, ideas, and words down . The final animation, Native Meditation, is my way to educate others about how we cultivate our mindfulness through our cultural history, present, and future.
